Breaking down catastrophe bond & ILS issuance by year

We’ve developed a new chart with which you can analyse catastrophe bond and related insurance-linked securities (ILS) issuance by type of transaction and year. We hope you find it a useful new feature.

This year has turned into a particularly active one for the catastrophe bond and related ILS market, with issuance already having surpassed records in certain cases.

Earlier in November, our Deal Directory saw a first record broken as the number of deals issued in 2020 so far surpassed a record previously set in 2018.

Then, just over a week ago, catastrophe bond and related insurance-linked securities (ILS) issuance in 2020 reached a new annual record, exceeding $14 billion for the very first time.

More records are set to fall, potentially all of the ones worth considering, which we realised means that it would be useful to be able to analyse issuance by year for the different types of transactions in the marketplace and that we report on here at Artemis.

So we’ve developed a new interactive chart that allows you to view all issuance by year, split by four different types of transactions that include: property catastrophe bonds; specialty, life, mortality etc; private cat bonds or cat bond lites; and the mortgage insurance-linked securities (ILS) deals that we track.

This new chart, Catastrophe bonds & related ILS risk capital issued by type and year, allows you to view all issuance, or click on the legend to deselect and include certain types of deals, while the total will dynamically recalculate in the tool-tip that appears when you hover or tap on each year of issuance.

It means if you want to find out how much pure catastrophe bond issuance we have recorded in our Deal Directory, or to exclude mortgage ILS from issuance statistics, you can now easily do that. We hope you find this a useful new chart.
