Determining How Much Home to Buy

Homebuyers have a lot of different choices to make when they are buying their home.  Whether you’re a first-time homebuyer or an experienced house shopper, the most important choice is determining how much home you should buy.  You have to look at a lot of different factors, from location and price, to the actual size of the home and how your family fits in it.

In terms of size, you want a home that your family can grow into.  Buying a home with insufficient room can force you to move again in a few years when you have another kid or need another room.  It needs to fit your needs.  Is there need for a home office?  Are you looking for a man cave, or a she shed?  Is the backyard big enough to entertain, or build a pool?  How about the landscaping?  Is there enough space for what you want to do?  Will your kids have the room they need to grow up?  Make sure you answer these questions before you buy or you might end up fighting your family for space before you know it.

However, too big comes with other problems.  Do you have an aversion to repair work?  More rooms means more places for things to break.  It also means more money. You will pay more for a larger home than you will a smaller one, of course.  Never buy all the way up to what you can afford.  Leave yourself some wiggle room in the budget for emergencies.

You can look for a home that FEELS more spacious and helps with space issues.  A finished basement, open floor plan or vaulted ceilings can make a smaller home feel like it is spacious.  You can also work on a less-than-ideal home and make it the home that you want.  Putting in outdoor features like a covered deck or patio can expand your living space out as well.
