Why Patient Positioning During Surgery Matters

Why does Patient Positioning During Surgery Matter?

The association of Surgical Technologies established standards of Practice for surgical positioning in 2011.  The goal was to provide best practices of patient positioning to provide optimal visual and access to the surgical site while effecting the least physiological compromise of the patient, while also protecting the skin and joints.

The three main components of safe positioning?

  1. Knowledge – surgical team must be knowledgeable in applying principles of patient positioning in the OR
  2. Planning – communication and coordination among the team to anticipate specific surgical patient challenges when determining best surgical positioning.  This also allows the correct equipment to be on hand for procedure.
  3. Teamwork – adequate number of trained personnel work together to safely and effectively position the patient.

By following the AST standards of practice of patient positioning, the organization believes every facility can reduce the changes of patient complication related to positioning.  These practices may also reduce the risk of injury to the surgical team.
