AXA re-hires de Courtois as Deputy CEO, to lead Ceded Reinsurance

Global insurance and reinsurance group AXA has announced that Frédéric de Courtois will be rejoining the company as Deputy CEO and will take charge of its Ceded Reinsurance function.

axa-logode Courtois will re-join AXA at the start of August after five years at rival Generali.

He had previously spent 19 years working at AXA, including as its Deputy CEO of AXA Re, Deputy CEO for Japan and Asia and as AXA’s CEO for Italy.

He then moved to rival Generali, becoming its CEO for International business and then most recently taking responsibility of a number of Group functions, including P&C and reinsurance, as well as having a seat on the management board.

In rejoining AXA, de Courtois will be a Deputy CEO with responsibility for Finance and Investments, Risk Management, Strategy, and Ceded Reinsurance (so reinsurance buying for the group).

Thomas Buberl, CEO of AXA, commented, “A new phase has started for AXA with the launch of its Driving Progress 2023 strategic plan. Our 2020 results have shown AXA’s resilience through the Covid-19 crisis and we are now fully focused on implementing our 2023 plan. In a context which will remain complex and volatile, we are announcing a renewed leadership team and a simpler organisation to accelerate the execution of our strategic priorities and t o consolidate AXA’s leadership across all our markets.”

George Stansfield has also been named another Deputy CEO and continues as Group General Secretary, with responsibility for Legal, Human Resources, Audit, Compliance and Public Affairs, will also oversee Communication, Brand and Sustainability.

Stansfield has been at AXA for more than 30 years, in the United States and France.

AXA has also made two more senior promotions, as Etienne Bouas-Laurent, Group Chief Financial Officer, will become CEO of AXA Belgium, effective July 1st and he will also oversee activities in Luxembourg.

While, Alban de Mailly Nesle, Group Chief Risk and Investment Officer, is set to take on the role of Group Chief Financial Officer while continuing to lead Group Investments, effective July 1st.

Prior to joining Generali, Frédéric worked at AXA for more than 20 years serving in a number of senior positions including CEO of AXA Italy. Frédéric will bring in-depth knowledge of the industry and financial markets and play a key role in the execution of our 2023 plan. I look forward to working closely with Frédéric and George in this new phase of our journey.

A number of other key leadership changes in the AXA group were also announced this morning.

Buberl commented, “I am confident that this new leadership team, strengthened by new talents and bringing together a great breadth of perspectives and personalities will be instrumental in helping us successfully navigate the new post-crisis environment, continue developing a diverse and inclusive culture, and consolidate AXA’s leadership and ambition for the industry.”
