Deep Hole Drilling: STS, Gundrill or DTS?

Deep Hole Drilling

Deep hole BTA

Zagar Precihole BTA

What is a deep hole drilling machine?  A deep hole drilling machine is designed to produce incredibly deep, precision holes into every kind of metal.  But how do deep hole drilling machines such as single tube systems (STS), gun drills, and ejector systems (DTS) compare?

BTAs or STS System

BTA, or Boring and Trepanning Association tools are also known as STS or Single tube system drilling tools.  This tool uses a single drill tube unlike other drill processes such as ejector drilling.  The Zagar

Precihole BTA deep hole drilling machines can deliver feed rates of over five times faster than gundrilling.  This speed is achieved through superior tool design,  with power, speed and efficient chip extraction.   In BTA, rotating cutting tools drill center holes into counter rotating cylindrical workpieces.   The cutting tool‘s carbide inserts and guide pads are mounted to a toolholder drill tube.  Coolant is supplied at high pressure, improving chip evacuation through the drill’s hollow center.  This chip removal ensures superior cutting efficiency.

Zagar’s Precihole BTA machines are designed for major parts production in power generation, nuclear energy, hydraulics and steel manufacturing.  They are also engineered to produce automotive, general and heavy engineering, defense, and off road vehicle parts.  The Precihole BTA deep hole drilling line from Zagar include four models with spindle powers from 22 to 115 kW.  Each Precihole BTA machine is available with Siemens CNCs.  These machines are capable of holemaking from 1 to 12 inch solid drilling, and 16 inch counter boring.  Hole drill lengths range up to forty feet.  If you are drilling smaller hole diameters, gun drilling could be used to achieve precision and straight, uniform holes.

Gundrills

Gundrills are great for extremely deep holes and small diameters of less than 2 inches. It is the single effective cutting edge on a gundrill tool that stands out.  That specially designed edge removes chips as it advances into a metal workpiece.    Zagar thruster drilling units can accommodate greater gundrilling thrust small diameter deep hole drilling.  This process, with high pressure coolant allows Deeper hole drilling; beyond what is possible with conventional machinery and tooling.

Gundrilling, as the name suggests, was developed for the manufacture of gun barrels.  The straightness and durability of the barrel was essential to function properly.  That process has been refined for ultimate performance on modern dedicated machinery.  Besides firearms, gundrilling is used for diesel fuel components, medical tooling, and plastic injection molds, among other products.

DTS or Ejector System

In the double tube or ejector system, pressurized coolant flows through the space between the outer and inner tubes towards the drill head.  The coolant flows through holes in the drill head to lubricate and evacuate chips within the inner tube of the system.  Because the area for chip evacuation is not as large as in a BTA, it is less efficient.  Because the tube diameter is larger than BTA drilling, the torsional strength is higher, allowing higher feeds.
