Mark Shuey, of Cane Masters Inc. and North Tahoe Martial Arts, has devoted decades of his life to his passion for helping disabled and mobility challenged to regain at least some of that mobility and confidence.  Grand Master Mark Shuey was one of the founders that Cane Masters Inc. in 1996, not just as mobile handcrafted works of art, but as a vehicle to share his passion for martial arts, specifically centered around the cane.  It soon became clear to GM Shuey, that the cane was a wonderful self defense tool.  Those most vulnerable, would have it out and ready, and could take it anywhere.  Mark Shuey developed the American Cane System, which is recognized around the world, as a discipline of martial arts that taught followers how to utilize their canes to protect themselves.  Out of this discipline, a new discovery was born.  Certain exercises with the cane, helped students recover from injuries faster and more fully.  The gently exercises of Cane Chi, which uses a series of resistance bands and your cane for simple techniques, was actually a powerful rehabilitation technique that medical professionals applauded for the great results it yielded.

Today, the Mark Shuey American Cane System has a few disciplines under its umbrella: Cane Ja- a cane-centric martial art self defense discipline, Cane Fu- a martial art technique, which utilizes the cane fighting techniques, and Cane Chi- a gentle but effective martial art technique that focuses on wellness and health, with movements that build strength and balance in the participants.  Every Mark Shuey American Cane System uses martial arts movements and techniques to build a healthy body with increased mobility and confidence.
